-"This is Your Life," Switchfoot

"I'm not sure I can do this."

Clark Kent, reporter, reached out and patted his girlfriend's arm reassuringly. "Sure you can, Lo. You finagled an interview with Perry White, after all. If you can do that, getting him to hire you ought to be a piece of cake."

"You don't fool me," she said, smoothing back her long brown hair nervously. "I didn't get this inteview on my own. You talked to him about me."

"Maybe a little. But trust me, he wouldn't have agreed to even see you if he hadn't liked your articles. I don't have that kind of pull with Perry. I'm just a junior reporter, after all."

"It's just..." She perched on the corner of his desk, swinging a long leg. Her voice dropped, so that he had to use his superhearing to hear her over the bustle of the Daily Planet newsroom. "My resume isn't all that great. Five years' worth of articles for the Inquisitor. How can someone like Perry White possibly take me seriously?"

"Because you're a good reporter," he said, looking at her seriously. "And your articles show it. You're the best, Lo. It's way past time you move up to the Planet."

"Okay." She took a deep breath. "Wish me luck, Kent."

He grinned at her. "You don't need it, Lane."

She stood up, straightened her suit, and marched toward Perry's office. He watched her disappear through the door, her shoulders squared and her head held high. The door closed behind her, and rather than continue watching with X-ray vision, as he was tempted to do, he turned back to his desk.

A gold-framed photo caught his eye, and he picked it up, seeing a smile that had once lit up his world. A wistful feeling tugged at his heart. He was happy with the way things were... but there were days when he really missed that smile.

He stared at the face of Chloe Sullivan, his best friend since middle school, and thought about the day when everything changed.
