"You did that on purpose."

Chloe looked over at him. She was sprawled on the grass, and she looked pretty pleased with herself. She grinned. "Of course I did. I wanted to make love to Clark, not Kal."

A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. "You didn't seem to object to Kal all that much."

"Kal has his good points," she admitted. "But you're the one I've been in love with for years."

He blinked. "You're in love? With me?"

"The fact that you even have to ask that question," she said dryly, "is clear proof that you do not possess even the most rudimentary skills of observation. You obviously need to drop your major in journalism and go take up basketweaving, Clark."

He felt his cheeks turn red. "Uh. Well. I just didn't realize."

"Yeah, you did. You were just too scared to admit it to yourself."

That was probably true, but he wasn't about to tell her that. "I wasn't scared. I was cautious."

"Crap. You were terrified."

He sighed. "Yeah. I guess I was. I'm sorry, Chlo. You mean so much to me... and I almost lost you. I'm a moron."

"You're not a moron. Just a little dense. But maybe next time you can talk to me when you've got a problem, instead of keeping it all bottled up inside until you explode."

"I'll try," he promised humbly.

"I understand, really." She dropped her left hand onto his arm and began to stroke gently, her fingers caressing the sensitive skin of his inner arm. "I know you were afraid of hurting me, Clark, but you didn't. Even though you were a little out of control with the red K, you still didn't hurt me. You think maybe now you can get past this?"

He closed his eyes, enjoying the sensation of her fingers against his skin, and thought about it for a minute. "Maybe with a little more practice."

"A little?"

"Or a lot. A lot would probably be helpful."

She laughed softly. "We can do that." She sat up, then all of a sudden looked around, yanking down the hem of her dress. "Oh, my God," she said, her eyes round. "We had sex in public. Right in the middle of campus."

"It's not exactly the middle of campus. It's kind of a remote corner."

"Still. People come out here all the time."

"Yeah, they do. Anybody could have caught us. We could even have been arrested." He lifted an eyebrow. "Kind of exciting, huh?"

She stared at him. "You are a terrible influence, Clark. This is twice tonight you've gotten me to act like a slut in public."

He sat up, smiling innocently. "It wasn't me. It was Kal."

She looked at him, a sultry tilt to her mouth. "I suppose Clark Kent would never do something as illicit as having sex in public."

"I wouldn't dream of it," he answered.

She dropped the ring into the grass, moved toward him, and put her arms around his neck. "Are you sure?"

A tremor of panic ran through him, but he pushed it back. He'd made love to her once without hurting her. He could do this again. And again. "Well," he said, pretending to consider the matter, "it is pretty late. I doubt anyone'll come by."

"Plus, you've got your superhearing. You were listening for footsteps, right?"

"Oh, yeah," he said, lying through his teeth. The truth was that he hadn't listened to a damn thing beyond the violent pounding of her heart and her frantic cries of pleasure. "Absolutely."

She looked up at him and chuckled, a soft, husky laugh that made him go hard in an instant. "You're a terrible liar, Clark."

"I'll listen this time," he promised earnestly.

"Are you sure?"

"Definitely."

"Well, okay. It might be fun, then." She grinned. "But just this once."

He put his arms around her and kissed her. The fear was still lurking inside him, but he thought he could control it. With practice, anyway. Because now that he knew what making love to her was like, he sure as hell wasn't letting her get away. After three years of longing for her, he wasn't going to spend another moment without her, ever again.

Her arms went around his neck, and before long they were wrapped around each other again, his body sliding into hers. The ring lay in the grass several feet away, forgotten.

"Oh, God," she moaned in his ear as he moved inside her. "Oh, God, Clark."

He laughed softly at the desperate desire in her voice. "Looks like Kal brought out the bad girl in you, Chloe. I never realized you had an exhibitionist streak."

"Me neither," she whispered, her hands digging frantically into his hair, her body moving against his hard. "But I really like this, Clark."

"We're only doing it in public this once, remember?"

She moaned, sounding terribly disappointed. "Clark," she whispered. "Oh, please..."

"Well, maybe we can work something out."

"Like what?"

He pressed his face against her throat and smiled.

"Tomorrow night," he said, "let's go dancing."
