"I hear you and Jimmy are engaged."

Clark Kent tried to sound enthusiastic, but he was aware he sounded about as thrilled as a human who'd just been informed he needed to have three teeth pulled. His friend Chloe Sullivan had been dating Jimmy Olsen for several years now, and he'd figured the two of them were going to get engaged eventually. So he hadn't been terribly surprised to hear that Jimmy had finally popped the question. And it didn't bother him at all. In fact, he was perfectly okay with it.

The fact that he wanted to rip Chloe's office door off its hinges didn't mean anything. He was just having a really trying day. But his annoyance had nothing whatsoever to do with the news of Chloe's engagement. He was happy for her.

Really.

Seated in her corner office at the Daily Planet, Chloe looked up from her computer. Behind her, he could see the sprawling Metropolis skyline beyond the big plate glass windows of her office. She was dressed in a dark blue power suit, her long blonde hair drawn back in a professional style, and she looked exactly like what she was-- an ambitious, successful reporter who was enormously happy with every aspect of her life. He thought with a touch of bitterness that she deserved an ambitious, successful journalist like Jimmy, not a guy who was still struggling to get his journalism degree, the way Clark was.

Chloe beamed as he walked toward her. "He proposed last night," she said, sticking out her left hand, where a vivid red stone gleamed in a gold band.

Clark lifted his eyebrows. "What, he couldn't afford a diamond?"

"It's a ruby. Rubies aren't cheap."

"They aren't diamonds, either."

"He's on a photographer's salary," she answered, sounding a little annoyed as she pulled her hand back. "And unlike some people, he can't just pick up a chunk of coal, squish it, and produce a two-carat diamond."

At her offhand reference to his inhuman strength, Clark sighed, and a little current of wistfulness rippled through him. He could have given Chloe a really huge diamond. It would have suited her a lot better than a ruby, in his opinion.

But of course he wouldn't have given Chloe a diamond, because they weren't dating. They hadn't dated for years and years. In fact their one effort at a date had been a disaster-- literally. After that, they'd decided it was safer to remain friends.

And he was fine with that. Really.

"I'm sorry," he said, doing his best to sound meek in response to the annoyance in her tone. "It's a beautiful ring, Chlo."

She smiled and held it out again, admiring its sparkle in the fluorescent overhead lights. "It is, isn't it? Jimmy got it at Tiffany's last month when he was in New York. They make prettier designs than anything you can find in Metropolis."

"But why'd he pick a ruby? It's not your birthstone or anything."

"He told me it's because red is the color of love."

It's also the color of cheap engagement rings, Clark thought, but managed to keep that cynical reflection to himself. He knew he wasn't being fair, anyway. Rubies were damned expensive. Although he had a sneaking suspicion it might actually be a garnet, not a ruby, in which case it wasn't nearly good enough for Chloe.

"Let me take a good look at it," he said.

She held out her hand again, and he took her fingers into his hand, trying to ignore the warmth of her skin, and how fragile her hand was. Compared to him, she seemed so small, so defenseless, that he felt the same ridiculous impulse to protect her he always felt around her, the familiar mixture of protectiveness and possessiveness that had nothing to do with friendship, and everything to do with much deeper feelings he refused to acknowledge.

He couldn't acknowledge them. Because Chloe had a boyfriend. No, a fiancee. But either way, she was totally off limits to him.

He intended to focus his microscopic vision and study the rock to see how flawed it was-- pretty damn flawed, he was willing to bet-- but as his fingers closed around her hand, something raw and sensual flared through him, so unexpected, so startling, he almost yanked his hand back. Instead his grip tightened reflexively, and heat flowed through his nerves.

"Hey," she said, gently trying to tug her hand from his and failing. "I really need to get back to work, Clark. I have a story to write before lunch."

Totally irrational jealousy flamed up inside him, so hot it burned. His lips pulled back from his teeth in a feral snarl, and he glared into her eyes. "I suppose you're having lunch with Jimmy?"

She looked up at him, lifting her eyebrows in an expression of mild surprise. "That was the plan, yeah."

"You never have lunch with me any more."

"That's not true. I had lunch with you just last week."

"Only because Jimmy cancelled on you." He scowled down at her. "You hardly hang out with me any more, Chlo. And if you marry Jimmy, I'll never get to see you again."

"That's not true."

"It is true. I only see you a couple times a month now. And it's only going to get worse."

"So?" She tried to pull her hand away, a little more firmly. "Does this really surprise you? Did you really think I could keep hanging out with you all the time when I got married?"

He didn't let go of her hand, only stared down at her. A truth he'd been aware of for a long time, but never dared to say, rose to his lips, and he didn't try to silence it. "I don't want you to get married, Chloe."

"Tough." Frowning, she lifted her other hand to try to pry his fingers away, still without any success. He was strong enough that she couldn't make him let go unless he wanted to, and right now he definitely didn't want to let her go. "Jimmy and I are getting married, Clark. Deal with it."

He looked at her for a long moment, jealousy and anger and possessiveness all churning together somewhere deep inside him in a violent, explosive mixture of emotions.

"No," he said at last. He reached over the desk, grabbed her out of her chair, and swept her up in his arms, looking straight into her eyes. Her hands lifted, pushing at his shoulders, but he didn't let her go. He damn well wasn't going to let her go again.

She was so close to him he could have easily kissed her, and he barely managed to restrain the impulse. Because he didn't want to kiss her. Not yet. He had other plans.

"I'm going to change your mind," he told her.

This is a wonderful beginning. All of your stories are fantastic, but your Kal stories alway seem to get to me the most.

Can't wait to see where this goes, how he changes her mind, and what she says to Jimmy about giving her a meteor rock ring.

Eagerly looking forward to more.

"He bought it at Tiffany's," my ass! Frickin' cheapskate!

Thankfully, I can rely on trusty ole RedK to make Clark see sense. Hopefully he can make Chloe see sense.

Well done, Elly. Off to the next chapter!
