Clark had been flying for months, ever since a winter afternoon when he’d been superspeeding down a lonely road, enjoying the feel of the wind against his skin, and his feet had unexpectedly left the ground, launching him upward for the first time. But he’d never flown with anyone else. He’d certainly never made out in midair.

The summer breeze flowed over his skin, making it strangely sensitive, and the sunlight poured over him, warming him like an affectionate caress. But none of it felt as good as her hands, reaching up under his shirt and gently touching his bare back.

At the first touch of her hands, he jerked so violently that she yelped and clutched at him. “Don’t worry,” he whispered into her ear. “I told you, we won’t fall.”

He held her carefully, his hands curled protectively around her waist, although he actually wasn’t certain she’d fall if he let her go. He had a feeling that as long as she was in contact with his electromagnetic aura, she’d be able to stay aloft, just as he was. But he wasn’t quite certain enough of that to let go. Not that he couldn’t catch her if she started to plummet—but it would scare her, and he didn’t want to scare her. Ever.

At his softly spoken reassurance, she relaxed, and her hands began to slide over his back again, caressing every ridge and valley of bone and muscle, while her lips brushed lightly over his throat. He dropped his head back, his body moving restlessly under her questing hands and mouth. It felt so good that he had to grind his teeth together to stop himself from crying out.

Suddenly he wanted to touch her bare skin, too. For whatever reason—and yeah, maybe it was the ring, but maybe it was just long-repressed feelings bubbling to the surface—thought wasn’t far removed from action today as far as he was concerned. His hands slid up under her shirt, exploring her the way she’d been exploring him. Her skin felt warm and delicate and fragile beneath his hands, so smooth and perfect that he wondered why on earth he’d never touched her this way before.

“Clark.” Her voice was very soft against his throat. “We can’t do this.”

“Because of Jimmy?” He growled softly, annoyed by the reminder that she’d agreed to marry another man. She was his, damn it. “I told you, if you’re not wearing an engagement ring, you’re not engaged.”

“That’s not true, and you know it. Besides, it’s broad daylight. Someone will see us.”

“We’re five hundred feet up over empty countryside, Chlo. No one will see us.”

“Ever heard of satellites?”

Part of him—a deeply buried sensible part-- knew she was right. Ordinarily he was careful not to expose his powers this way in broad daylight. If he had to fly in the daylight, he did it at superspeed to minimize the possibility of being caught at it.

But today he felt reckless. He didn’t want to hide what he was any more. He didn’t want to hide what he felt any more. He just wanted the freedom to be what he was—a guy who could fly.

And a guy who had a serious thing for Chloe Sullivan.

“Chloe.” He lowered his head a bit and spoke into her hair. “I’ve been waiting for you for a long time. I don’t feel like waiting any longer.”

“You're so full of it.” She sounded indignant. “You never waited for me. You never even tried to stop me from going to Jimmy.”

Just the mention of Jimmy made his lips curl back from his teeth. He fought to keep his tone civil, because he didn’t want to fight with her. He wanted to have sex with her. “I backed off because I thought Jimmy made you happy.”

“He does.”

“Oh, he does not.” He forgot about being civil and glared down at her. “He’s nice and normal and mild-mannered. He’s easy for you to wrap around your fingers, easy for you to control. But that doesn’t mean he makes you happy, really happy, the way I do.”

She rolled her eyes, in the familiar snarky gesture, and a bittersweet pang made his chest tighten. He hadn’t realized how badly he’d missed her snark till just now. “I don’t know how you can fly with an ego that size. You’d think it would weight you down or something.”

He smiled wryly, amused despite himself. “It’s not my ego talking, Chlo. Being around me makes you happy, or we wouldn’t have spent so much time together in high school and college.”

“Maybe. But you don’t make me happy the way Jimmy does.”

“I make you happier. You’d rather hang out with me than Jimmy, and you know it.”

“Come on, Clark. Let’s be honest with each other here. We’ve hardly spent any time together lately.”

“Because when you spend time with me, Jimmy feels threatened and gets all clingy and needy and whiny. Isn’t that right?”

She hesitated, and he knew he’d hit the nail on the head. “You never really wanted to stop hanging out with me,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “You just felt like it was causing too many problems in your relationship with Jimmy.”

She lifted her head, and in her eyes he saw sorrow and confusion. She was silent for a long moment. At last she spoke in a bare whisper.

“I really miss you, Clark.”

At the soft confession, warmth flooded him, along with a primal, aching need for her, a familiar desire he hadn’t ever let himself admit he felt before today. “I miss you too,” he said softly. “And I’m tired of missing you. I want you back, Chlo.”

He lowered his head and kissed her roughly, his tongue thrusting into her mouth, his hand fisting in her hair. He heard a small sound of submission in her throat, and then her head fell back, her mouth opening wide to his. Her legs curled around his more tightly, and he groaned into her mouth as her body pressed against his.

His cock was rigid, almost painful with need, and the feel of her moving against him, stroking up and down the length of him, cradling him against her most intimate flesh, was almost enough to make him come. He gave serious consideration to rubbing against her a few times and just letting it happen.

But he managed to stop himself, because he didn’t just want to get off. He wanted Chloe.

She kissed him back just as fiercely, her hands clutching his shoulders, her calves curled around his. Her body seemed to melt against his until there wasn’t a millimeter of space between them. He opened his eyes and looked at her, seeing her hair pulled back in a sternly professional ponytail. All of a sudden he wanted to see it flowing loosely, and he reached behind her and tugged at the barrette that confined it. Her hair fell free, rippling in the breeze.

It was longer now than it had ever been, and it waved around her face and fell well past her shoulders. It glowed a brilliant gold in the summer sunshine, and her eyes were a darker shade of gold, shadowed with hints of a dark, mysterious green. She must have been spending a lot of time outdoors, because she was tanner than usual, and her skin was golden, too. She looked like summer itself, all gold and green, making him think of sunshine and new leaves and long lazy days, and her body felt as warm as a summer day against his.

“Please,” he said softly. “Let me make love to you, Chlo.”

He didn’t say the rest of it: Choose me instead of Jimmy. He couldn’t bring himself to say it, because it made him feel too vulnerable just to think the words. Saying them would have put his heart out there for her to rip to pieces, and he didn’t quite dare. But the unspoken words hung in the air between them. She stared into his eyes, and he had a feeling she knew exactly what he was thinking.

Please don’t turn your back on me again, Chlo. I need you. I can’t live without you any more.

At last the corners of her mouth turned up. “Okay,” she agreed softly. “Make love to me, Clark.”

Aw, I loved the ending - Clark putting his heart out there, all vulnerable, and Chloe yielding to him. That's what we like to see!
