Two hundred years.

Sprawled in bed in his Fortress of Solitude, Clark smiled as he lay gazing up at his beloved. He'd loved Chloe Sullivan Kent unceasingly for all those years, and he knew he would never stop loving her.

He loved her so desperately that the terrible fear that he would one day lose her had once brought him perilously close to losing his sanity. He hadn't been able to bear the idea that his invulnerable Kryptonian body would outlive her fragile human one. He hadn't been able to stand the thought of losing her.

Fortunately, he hadn't had to. Because Chloe was immortal now, just as he was.

He'd once thought he'd go insane with grief, but he no longer had to face the emptiness of an existence without her. He was perfectly sane, and always would be, because she was with him.

"I love you, Chlo," he whispered, the exact same sentiment he'd uttered every night since they'd wed, two centuries before.

"I love you, Clark."

Her voice-- the same sweet voice he'd fallen in love with all those years ago-- echoed in his ears. He smiled, knowing how fortunate he was to still have her, even after all these years.

Other people outlived the ones that mattered most to them. Other people had to suffer the terrible pain of losing their loves.

But he'd managed to save his.

Despite the fact that he could never die, he would never, ever have to be alone. He would never have to cope with the unbearable loss of the person he loved most in the world.

He rolled over in his bed, and the blue-white lights of the Fortress dimmed around him. He closed his eyes, thinking back to the long-distant day when he'd saved her.

A hundred and fifty years ago, she'd been dying a long, slow, agonizing death. Desperate, maddened with grief, he'd used Kryptonian technology in a last-ditch effort to save her, and transferred her consciousness as she died.

And now she could never die, and he would never have to face losing her, and his own sanity. She would be with him forever and always, just as immortal as he was, his love eternal.

Because Chloe wasn't just with him at the Fortress.

Chloe was the Fortress.

That's kinda cool, but a little on the wonko side for Clark.

Which is how it was intended, Aaron. I remarked on my LJ that given his obsession with Lana, I could kind of see him getting obsessed with his next love, too. I don't think it's Supermanly, but I do think you could argue the writers have written SV!Clark on the scarily obsessive side.

Thank you guys for the feedback!

Sad, Beautiful, and slightly creepy. This story really showed what you were saying with how SV makes Clark Kent sort of on the obssesive side when it comes to love (ex. Lana) but I liked how you wrote it. Your imagination is amazing, I wasn't thinking she was the Fortress...that was such a twist! I loved this story, very unique.

Great Job!
