Light On

Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
Something I rely on to get home
One I can feel at night
A naked light, a fire to keep me warm

Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
Even in the daylight, shine on
And when it’s late at night you can look inside
You won’t feel so alone
-David Cook, "Light On"

Millions of lights illuminated Metropolis at night.

But only one really mattered to him.

He hesitated over the city, letting the sight of it soak into him. He'd been gone for three days, helping the Justice League deal with the results of a catastrophic earthquake in Japan, and he'd missed his city a great deal.

But not as much as he'd missed her.

He slowly sank lower through the midnight sky, letting himself be drawn toward the one particular light that for him glowed more brightly than any of the others. He'd known she would leave a light on for him. She always did. "To light your way home," she always said with a smile, as if he couldn't find his way back to her in Stygian darkness, just by the sound of her heartbeat.

What he did was important. He knew that. But for him, coming home to her was just as important. She recharged his batteries after long days and longer nights of fighting to save people.

When he was almost too weary to stand, the sight of her smile lifted him out of his fog of exhaustion, and the sound of her happy laughter lifted his heavy heart. The gentle caress of her hand ignited a spark within him, no matter how tired he felt. The feel of her soft body in his arms made the spark grow until it consumed him, burning away his weariness and despair.

And her arms encircled him as he slept and kept him warm, in a world that was too often bitterly cold.

He sank lower, until the only light that mattered to him shone like a beacon. And then, unable to wait a moment longer, he dropped into a steep dive and arrowed toward it, heading for home.

Heading for her.
