"Last night, I dreamed."

He held her against his chest and spoke into her hair, his voice muffled. She could tell by the way he held her-- tightly, almost protectively-- that the dream had upset him. She didn't say anything, just put her arms around him. She heard his soft sigh of contentment.

"I dreamed that I loved someone else," he whispered into her hair. "That I turned my back on you and walked away, Chlo. That we weren't even friends any more."

She laughed softly against his chest. "That's silly, Clark. That could never happen. We've known each other since high school. How could we ever stop being friends?"

"Yeah." His grip on her loosened slightly. "It was silly, I guess. You've been too important to me for too long for me to ever turn my back on you. And as for falling in love with someone else--"

"That isn't too hard to imagine," she said wryly.

He squeezed her again, almost apologetically. "Once I got the Lana blinkers off," he said, "I realized it had been you all along. It couldn't be anyone else, Chlo. It just... couldn't."

She tightened her arms around his shoulders. "It was just a dream, Clark. Dreams don't make any sense."

"I guess maybe deep down... I'm afraid of losing you."

"You won't." She chuckled. "You can't get rid of me now, Clark. You're stuck with me."

He wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly. She leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart.

"This is how it was always meant to be," he whispered. "You and me together."

"Yes," she agreed, holding him just as tightly as he was holding her. "This is how it was meant to be."
