-"Wonderful World," Sam Cooke

She said yes.

Clark Kent gazed out the window, totally oblivious to his teacher's droning voice. It was a beautiful spring day. The sun cast a golden glow over the school grounds, the grass was a vivid carpet of green dotted with yellow dandelions, and a few fluffy white clouds scudded across the sapphire sky. It was way too beautiful a day to be inside.

But it wasn't the day's beauty that had him so distracted. It was a girl. Yesterday afternoon, he'd asked Chloe Sullivan to go to the spring formal with him... and she'd said yes.

"Mr. Kent!"

Startled by the sound of Mr. Cooke's voice, he whipped his head around a little faster than he should have. He realized he'd inadvertently gone into superspeed, and he hoped no one had noticed. The guy next to him was staring at him a little oddly, like he wasn't sure exactly what he'd seen, but at least he wasn't pointing and screaming "Freak!"

"Uh," Clark said. "Yes, sir."

"Mr. Kent, can you tell me what year the War of 1812 began?"

Clark stared at his teacher blankly. "Uh..." He tried to focus on the question, but his mind began to drift to his conversation with Chloe yesterday. Even in the dim shadows of the barn, she'd seemed to glow with a golden light. He remembered the way Chloe had responded to his hug, the way she'd smiled at him when he'd asked her to the dance, the way her eyes had lit up.

The way she'd told him he was worth the wait.

He began to drift off into a reverie, unaware of the giggles of his classmates. His friend Pete Ross gave him a hard shove from behind, just as Mr. Cooke snapped, "Mr. Kent!"

"Uh," he said again. It didn't sound any more brilliant than it had the last time, and he tried really hard to sound more intelligent. Or at least awake. "What was the question again?"

His teacher glared, bushy gray eyebrows lowering ominously over his eyes like thunderclouds. "The year in which the War of 1812 began!"

Clark tried really, really hard to concentrate on the question. But all he could see was short blonde hair and a big smile and glowing hazel eyes...

Pete gave him another shove, and he jumped. "1914," he answered.

The whole class erupted in laughter. Clark blinked, then realized what he'd said and grinned ruefully. Even Mr. Cooke was laughing at him. But Clark didn't mind, because World History just didn't seem to matter that much today.

What mattered was that Chloe had agreed to go to the spring formal with him.

History, biology, French... he'd screwed up in all of them today, but he just didn't care. Because he and Chloe were going to the dance together.

He and Chloe had been friends for a year now. In fact, the very day they'd met, he'd put her into a compartment in his mind marked "friend." He'd never seriously thought about going out with her before.

But all of a sudden, it was all he could think about.

It wasn't like he was in love with Chloe, not really. He loved her, sure, but he wasn't in love with her. At least he didn't think he was. But even so, the thought of seeing her in a formal gown and dancing with her...

Well, he might not be in love, but the idea made his heart race and his mind drift out of school, right out into the beautiful spring afternoon. Right out into the sunshine. He couldn't wipe the big dumb smile off his face, no matter how hard he tried.

He was pretty sure he wasn't in love. Not yet.

But this was definitely a wonderful world.
